October 15th is officially the first day of Stone Crab season in Florida. Stone Crab claws are to Florida what lobster is to Maine. One of the many advantages of living in Key West is we can buy the claws right off the boat. They are in our mouth just a couple hours after being taken out of the ocean. I’m going down to the commercial fishing docks this afternoon to see if I can pick some up. There is one tip I have learned about commercial fisherman arriving at the dock. You can usually trade them a $20 case of beer for $50 worth of fresh seafood. Business tends to be done a little bit differently in Key West. Cash may be king but beer is better when dealing with tired thirsty fishermen. You too can live in the Florida Keys and I can help you make it happen.
