Key West has always been known to have a large Cuban population and a lot of their ethnic culture is part of makes our Island what it is today. Every time someone is in town with me to look at Florida Keys Real Estate I take them to El Siboney, a Cuban restaurant I eat at at least 4 times a week. Come on down to the Keys, let's look at some Key West homes for sale and have a nice Cuban lunch. Aside from great food, Cuba has also produced some great artists. Here is some history of Cuban art.
Liberty, in the Shadow of Silence,” an exhibition of contemporary Cuban Art, curated by Alaen Ledesma Fernandez, opens Thursday, July 1 at 5:30 p.m. at the historic Gato Building in Key West. The exhibit represents the artwork of more than 50 prominent Cuban artists.
The Gato Building is steeped in Cuban heritage. Jose Marti gave a historic presentation during his first visit to Key West in 1891, and the building was originally a Cuban cigar factory. The new exhibition functions as a sort of restart, a new opening for Cuban artists in the United States.
The exhibit is part of the Arts Council’s Art in Public Buildings program, designed to offer an opportunity for artists to exhibit their work beyond a traditional gallery space and enhance the environment of those who work and visit the Gato Building. The show will continue through Oct. 1, and the Gato Building is open Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free parking is available, and both the building and show are ADA accessible.
This exhibit is sponsored in part by the Florida Keys Council of the Arts, the State of Florida: Division of Cultural Affairs, as well as other supporters. Additional support comes from donations by show visitors.
